Volume One
Building the Foundations for Confident Kriah
Derech LeKriah Volume One is a carefully structured Hebrew reading curriculum that builds the essential skills every child needs before beginning Siddur reading.
Students progress step by step from learning and differentiating the Nekudos to accurate decoding, Chibur, and the foundations of Shva Na and Shva Nach. Clear instruction, gradual progression, and built-in review help each skill become strong and automatic before the child moves forward.

A Clear Learning Path
Volume One guides students through a carefully sequenced progression of foundational Kriah skills.
Learning How to Read from a Page
Students learn how to follow a structured page correctly — from top to bottom and from one line to the next — while developing proper visual tracking, focus, and reading habits.
Mastering the Nekudos
Each Nekudah is introduced clearly and practiced systematically. Students learn to:
- Recognize each Nekudah quickly and accurately
- Connect the Nekudah with its correct sound
- Differentiate between similar Nekudos
- Read each letter-and-Nekudah combination confidently
Developing Accurate Decoding
Students are trained to look carefully at the Ois and Nekudah together before reading. Gradual practice strengthens accuracy, consistency, and automatic recognition.
Building Chibur
Once individual sounds are secure, students begin combining them into connected syllables and words. The progression moves from simple combinations to increasingly advanced reading patterns.
Introducing Shva
Volume One introduces the foundations of Shva Na and Shva Nach, preparing students for the more complex words and reading patterns they will encounter in the Siddur.
By the completion of Volume One, the student has developed:
- Strong recognition of the Nekudos
- Accurate and consistent decoding
- Proper visual tracking and reading habits
- A foundation in Chibur
- An introduction to Shva Na and Shva Nach
- Greater confidence when approaching a Hebrew page
